Job Position

The position offered is that of a Product Design Manager in the Engagement organization within Discord. The primary goal is to deepen user engagement and retention on the platform. As a manager, you will oversee a team of designers, focusing on several strategic themes aimed at creating enjoyable and effective user interfaces. You will balance your responsibilities between strategic planning and hands-on craft leadership while working closely with cross-functional partners from Product and Engineering teams.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

• Develop a team of highly engaged designers, providing coaching and promoting ownership.
• Direct and guide the output of product designers, fostering collaboration and effective design processes.
• Build strong relationships with engineering and product management teams to influence product strategy and execution.
• Collaborate with other senior designers and partners to define the roadmap and ensure priorities are well established.
• Maintain a balanced pace for the team, encouraging a culture of quality while adapting to change as necessary.
• Mentor team members on user-centric thinking and promote risk mitigation strategies.
• Occasionally contribute to design work, although the role primarily focuses on management and leadership.

Required Skills and Experience

To qualify for this position, candidates should demonstrate:

• 2+ years of experience as a Design Manager, with a history of leading at least two product designers.
• 6+ years of working experience in digital product design, particularly across multiple platforms. This includes expertise in mobile product development and proficiency in prototyping tools to showcase product concepts.
• A strong portfolio featuring designed and shipped work, showcasing your leadership in design outputs by your team.
• A genuine passion for people leadership, with an emphasis on recruiting, training, and developing teams.
• A keen eye for craftsmanship, allowing you to identify areas in need of further investment or time in visual or interaction design.
• A proven track record of successful partnerships with engineering and product leadership.
• Ability to thrive in ambiguous situations, formulating strategies to navigate unpredictable challenges in product development and team dynamics.
• Comfort with engaging in design work, reinforcing that even in a managerial role, one remains a part of the design process.

Salary and Benefits

The salary range for this full-time position is $220,000 to $247,500, alongside equity opportunities and benefits.
